Solar Batteries in Christchurch
A home battery stores the solar power you make during the day so you can use it in the evening and early morning, when most homes use the most power. Here's how solar batteries work, what they cost in Christchurch, and how to tell if one is worth it for your home.

How a home battery works
Solar panels make the most power in the middle of the day, which is often when nobody is home. Without a battery, anything you don't use straight away is sent back to the grid. With a home battery, that extra solar charges the battery instead, and the battery powers your home later in the day.
The battery sits alongside an inverter (or battery controller), usually mounted on a wall in the garage or on the outside of the house. It works automatically: it charges when your panels make more than you're using, and discharges when they don't.
Why a battery can make sense in New Zealand
Power companies usually pay you far less for the solar you send back to the grid than you pay for the power you buy from them. That gap is where a battery earns its keep: every unit of solar you store and use yourself is a unit you don't have to buy back at the full price.
- Use more of your own solar. Instead of exporting cheap and buying back expensive, you keep more of what you generate.
- Lower evening and morning bills. Cooking, heating, hot showers and the heat pump can run from stored solar instead of the grid.
- Backup during power cuts. Many batteries can keep some or all of the house running in an outage, but only if the system is set up for backup. Not every installation includes it, so ask your installer.
- More control over time-of-use plans. On some power plans a battery can also charge when power is cheaper and run the house when it's dearer.
What a solar battery costs in Christchurch
Based on recent Christchurch pricing from local installers, adding a battery of around 9 to 10 kWh usable to a new solar system typically adds about $11,000 to $14,500 incl. GST. Whole-home backup, where it's offered, can add roughly another $1,400.
Most of a battery's cost is the controller, wiring and installation, not the storage itself. That means a smaller battery is usually only a little cheaper, and going bigger costs less per kWh than you might expect. Your installer will size it to your actual usage.
Indicative only. Your price depends on the battery brand, size, your switchboard and the install. A site visit confirms the final price.

Is a battery worth it for your home?
A battery takes longer to pay for itself than solar panels alone, so it isn't the right call for every home. It tends to suit you if:
- Your household uses a lot of power in the mornings and evenings (out at work or school during the day, heat pump at night, electric hot water).
- You already have solar and are sending a lot of it back to the grid.
- You want backup power during outages.
- You're on, or open to, a power plan with cheaper and dearer times of day.
If you're mostly home during the day and already using your solar as it's made, a battery may add less. We'll talk it through with you before anything goes to an installer.
Adding a battery to existing solar
Yes, you can usually add a battery to a system you already have. Depending on your current inverter, the installer may add a battery with its own inverter, or replace your inverter with a hybrid one that runs both. A photo of your inverter and switchboard helps the installer tell you which before they visit.
What to expect
- Quote: based on your power bills and how you use power, ideally after a site visit.
- Approval: grid-connected systems in Christchurch need approval from Orion, the local network. Your installer handles this.
- Installation: usually done in about a day.
- Warranty: many home batteries come with warranties of around 10 years. Check the details for the battery you're quoted.
